Your canvas: 8x8 pixel square ->Tiles 16x16 pixel square ->Blocks 128x128 pixel square ->Chunks (Sonic 2) 256x256 pixel square ->Chunks (Sonic 1) Chunks are made up of Blocks which are made up of Tiles. Still with me? Colors: How do you know which color works and which doesn't? Well you have to simplify. Pick a color. Go into the properties window and look at the part where it is like e715a3 or basically what looks like code of nonsense that includes both letters and numbers. Change the 2nd, 4th, and 6th character to "0" so the example above would be e010a0. You have yourselves a color that can be used on the Genesis. You can only pick 16 colors max. Or rather, 16 colors per single palette line...which the tiles use. Only one palette line per tile. There are 4 palette lines that can be used on the screen at once, so tiles with different palette lines CAN be mixed and matched. However, the 4 palette lines always fall into this pattern: 1st=Sonic and General (this never changes, don't change this) 2nd= Sub General (this changes slightly, but don't let that fool you. This is where stuff like spikes and rings and the hub get their colors, don't change this either) 3rd=Foreground and sometimes Background (this is what you will be editing the most) 4th=Badniks, Objects, Animation palette, sometimes Background (level specific, for people who know what they are doing) Oh and the first color on every palette line is a transparency. But I consider "pixel art" to be a contradiction of terms emerging from the same line of thought that allowed people to hang a blank canvas in the Museum of Modern Art.
