A paling man was someone who was a legitimate eel merchant.
An eel picker was someone who sorted through the village trash to find reusable eels.
The local eel and bone man was an itinerant merchant who dealt in eel carcasses and especially eel teeth.
An eel crier was a young man posted at the edge of town to watch for eels (often an unintelligent person)
An eelwright was maker of false eels as decoys or for decoration.
An eel animist was an esoteric profession. Animists claimed eels could be fashioned out of river mud, as the gonads of the eel would not be discovered for several decades.
A ratter was someone who caught rats to throw at eels to distract them.
An eel checker was someone who would check a home and wagons for eels.
An eel smeller was a skilled artisan trained to sniff out eels who had disguised themselves as Dutchmen.
An eel almanacker predicted the seasons when eels would be plentiful and when they would disappear to spawn. It would also include a calendar to reveal when eels would be secretive, or wistful or accusing.
A scrimshander or scrimshonger was an artisan who carved scenes from daily colonial life in delicate small etchings on eel teeth.
A toothsmith was a dedicated eel tooth polisher and seller.
An eel meterer was one who wrote poems about eels.
An eel tonguer was one who learned the language of eels.
An eel orphan was a human child raised by eels after their parents had died or willfully given him up to become an eel tonguer.
A rod man, also known as an eel poker, is self-explanatory.
